Brendan Bloody Brendan

July 24th 2008 12:19
Brendan, Brendan, Brendan 24/7/2008

For months now it has been well publicised. The fate of renowned larrikin and Carlton spear head Brendan Fevola cold be hanging in the balance, at least as far as the Carlton part is concerned. Yes indeed ever since that infamous night, at that dud of a boxing match the rumours have spread like wild fire that the former Coleman Medalist may have been packing his bags with red and white and heading on a plane to Sydney. Curiously though, it seems at times that ‘Fev’ himself has been the one providing the oxygen upon which ever fire thrives. Not necessarily pronouncing the rumours as truth but just, ever so gently, fanning the flames.

I’ve found it down right confusing that when the whispers of a possible move north starting creeping along the grapevine, the big man nor his manager did nothing to stamp out the rapidly strengthening sparks, then when he grew tired of toying with the media he came out and denounced them for reporting a perfectly juicy story. When the a carcass such as that is placed in front of the media, they will swarm upon it like vultures, he knows this better then anyone. Therefore It seems to me odd that one with a profile such as his would just sit back, quietly allowing the gossip to fester and not doing anything about it until he felt like it. Much like letting a child do something naughty within you line of vision, not intervening and then punishing them for something you could have prevented. Sorry mate that’s not how it works.

He had numerous chances to quell the media frenzy, on the ‘Footy Show’ and during various other minglings with the Journo’s but he did nothing. Whenever questioned on the issue he would give only half answers, or change the topic. Not a word to defend his honour; and now he is left clutching at whatever miniscule shred of it remains. If this was a pathetic ploy to attract the attention of other clubs, an attempt at some sort of masculine show to bait other teams, as the male peacock would a potential partner, it failed dismally.

I ask once more, what does he have to gain from such a display? For many moons now the Carlton Football Club has stuck by him, and this is how he repays them? By showing little if any genuine commitment to the club which has served him so well, even when he could not be said to have done the same. Throughout the Brendan Fevola rollercoaster ride the club has had to endure many traumas which they can attribute to him. There are the numerous drinking escapades, the assault in Ireland, the time he actually pissed in public. Oh and let’s not forget that little period in 2007 when he just plain didn’t seem to care about his footy anymore and couldn’t agree with the coach about anything. Ill concede he’s kicked many bags here and there and played some stellar games along the way but has his treatment of his club of late been just….one wonders.

In short, it appears that Brendan toyed with the papers, his club and others, but most importantly the fans this year. Keeping in mind there’s still a few rounds left. He’s had many a flirtatious gaze at the rest of the AFL, but now that he wants to stay at Princes Park, one wonders, will his club take back their unfaithful lover or hang him out to dry in trade week. I suppose time will tell.

Weekend Wrap

March 31st 2008 03:16
It was a good week in Football during round to, we saw some good games, some great goals and also some injuries we'd rather not have seen.

On Friday night a determined Brisbane over ran a tired Collingwood in the last quarter, to grab a 2 point victory from the jaws of defeat. Come Saturday afternoon, another game for Melbourne, and another resounding defeat 66-151 Saturday was a day for wins, and big ones at that wutg a surprise belting of West Coast to the tune of 76pts, Final Score 133-57

As we slipped in to the darkness of night we saw Hawthorn score another win, to put them at the top of the table with 2 from 2. We also saw yet another.... comfortable win. With St, Kilda overcoming a Carlton team that was never really in it 125-85.

Sunday came, and with it the trend of big wins seemed set to continue. In the first match of the day Geelong showed us the form which won them a premiership last year. Completely smashing the Bombers, who had been promising this season up until then 150-51. While in a match that was never going to be an absolute classic. The Kangaroos or North Melbourne as they now want to be called, made sure of a result that was never in doubt. Beating Richmond 127-86.

So after to rounds of the AFL season the top 4 consists of Hawthorn, Geelong, Western Bulldogs and St. Kilda. While the bottom four is occupied by Fremantle , Carlton, Port Adelaide and Melbourne sitting at the basement. Not to much value can be placed on the ladder at this early stage of the season, but it is beginning to take shape.

Hawks See Through The Purple 'Haze

March 29th 2008 12:41
Hawthorn probably should have won by more then the meager 15 points it beat Freo by tonight but I suppose their percentage is already high enough (what with the 104 point belting of Melbourne the previous week.) but thats still know excuse to let you foot of the peddle.

The dockers made a late surge, after their deficit grew to as many as 31 points early in the 3rd. What with injuries to Young and Dew they can be forgiven for somewhat loosing their way as far as stamina was concerned. Though the margin is slim I don't think there was ever any real doubt that Hawthorn had won the game long before the last.

When Roughead and Franklin both kick 4 and a number of others chip in with healthy contribution the Hawks are always set to fair well. In fact one of the major reasons they did so was because I think Freo were trying to stop Buddy from getting 6 or 7 and in the process lost sight of Roughy, allowing him to sneak for some reasonably easy goals.

The young kids looked good, Stokes and Rioli providing that slick foot foot speed and crumbing that would have been considered Hawthorns weakness up front over the last few years. While Travis Tuck was extremely promising in mid-field, racking up numerous possessions, as well as goaling at a crucial point in the match On the other side of the coin, first-gamers Mayne and Rhys Palmer seemed jittery to begin with but slowly began to adapt to the pace of the game. They kicked goals late in the game as a consolation for the determined Dockers.

All in all, you wouldn't call it a comprehensive win for the brown and gold, but it was a victory all the same and one that places them on top of the table, with a very encouraging 181%.

They easily steered their way through the purple haze tonight

Melburned and Dogs Tails Wagging

March 29th 2008 12:19
I imagine that Dean Bailey would have come to the MCG today with some hope in his heart, praying for a better performance from his boys then what he received last week. In the begging he probably thought he was set for an easier journey but that little voice in the back of his head would have been telling him not to get to confident....it would have been right.

There would be absolutely no point in going on to detail all the nos and woes of a Melbourne team to day that just don't seem to have the fire in they're bellies and quite frankly, looked more like statues then demons today

Collingwould if not for Brisbane

March 29th 2008 12:05
If I were a betting man, I'm show i could have got about even odds for either team on before the start of Friday nights thrilling clash. Both sides coming off good round 1 performances and ready for action, with both of their respective 'power fowards' looming large. This one was set to be am absolute epic. Chill the drinks, warm the pies, grab the remote and relax

Bradshaw got things rolling for the lions, with a nice snap and goal from the pocket and the 1st quarter was set to be a good back and forth battle. In the final few minutes Travis Cloke kicked truly (for once) and the margin was just two points....GAME ON

Buddy Boy

March 25th 2008 23:24
As a life long hawthorn supporter, people would be forgiven for thinking that I may be a little bias. However I cant help but feel that anyway who watches AFL on a regular basis, and saw Sunday nights Havks Demonds 'contest', would be pondering the much the question ' Just how good could this boy be?'

Now I realize that it wasn't just Franklin that won us that game, far from it. To go through all the awsome performers of the Hawthorn side thiis week though would take way to long. So I'll just focus on our spearhead, the inigma that is Lance 'Buddy' Franklin

Javier Any Sense

March 25th 2008 04:05
Liverpool, Liverpool, Liverpool..... what more can I say other then to point out the fact that they always promise much and deliver...little, atleast in the Premiership. Sundays performance was less than inspiring. But it would be unfair to judge the whole team by it, as they were down to 10 men for the majority of the match

For the cause of their depleted rescources, look no further then the Argentinian Javier 'Big Mouth' Mashcerano. After he made a tackle early in the game and subsequently received a yellow card (wether it was there or not is another matter) you would think he would have been very careful about how he acted for the rest of the match. You thought wrong

Piss Week

March 25th 2008 03:49
Are you serious. Just days after the Fev gets a 10g fine for pissing outside a pub Kane Johnson decides to go and top him by doing his buisness, of all places, outside a police station. Now I'm all for celebrating a good win and having fun but come on were do you draw the line.

Don't get me wrong Kane has a good record and I think he should be given another chance because it is a first offence. But if you look at the big picture, you have to say it's pretty perthetic. Not just his behaviour but the behaviour of AFL Players in general. Most of them are pretty good and no where to stop. However it only takes one bad apple to spoil the whole bunch and the continued behaviour of some of our stars makes our game look bad

Stupidity All Around

March 21st 2008 12:04
I am sick and tired of high class AFL Footballers with egos as big as their saleries and the assumption that they are invincible and can do whatever they want. They parade around like idiots and in some cases the clubs they play for do nothing about it other then to give them the occasion strongly worded reprimand or token fine.

The lavishly payed young men have the world at their feet, they have abilities many of us mere mortals would kill for and they squander their gifts away in pursuit of a 'party life. They do whatever they feel whenever they feel without any signs of remorse or having learnt their lessons. Then they wonder why they come under such harsh media scrutiny
