Collingwood's Leon Davis was among the Collingwood winners in Saturday's match against the Swans
Melbourne were looking to extend their winning streak to 3 games when they took on Richmond at the MCG on Monday night. But from the opening bounce, it was the Tigers that were first to the ball and in a dominant display took control of the game. By half-time the margin had blown out to 64 points, and for Melbourne to win from there they would have to beat the all-time biggest comeback record. For a few fleeting moments in the third term it just looked possible as the Demons ran through 6 goals to 2 for the quarter; but Richmond showed the strength of character so often lacking this season to steady the ship and ensure the Tigerland song would ring out loud and proud for the first time in 2007.

Sydney’s well-promoted blockbuster at Telstra Stadium on Saturday night attracted a sensational crowd of over 64,000; but the majority Swans fans were to be silenced by an insipid display from the locals. Instead it was the Collingwood side that dominated, their defence holding the Swans to just a single goal in each of the first three quarters; and by then the result was beyond doubt. Young Magpie gun Dale Thomas captured the eye with a strong performance up forward, booting 4 goals and putting on a celebration after each major score. The result keeps the Magpies in a strong top-4 position, while the Swans are left languishing in 10th position with a tough away trip to Skilled Stadium to come and captain Barry Hall horribly lacking in any semblance of form.

Even in a round of upsets, West Coast went into their match against St Kilda at Subiaco as the hottest of favourites. But the Saints were motivated by dual Brownlow medallist Robert Harvey’s 350th game, and the visitors rose to the occasion magnificently. The locals were left in stunned disbelief as the Saints took control around the ground to race to a 44-point lead in the third quarter. West Coast fought back strongly, kicking 5 in a row to finish the quarter and when Quentin Lynch scored early in the last the margin was back to 5 points. But St Kilda held on, stopping the Eagle momentum and finally it was Nick Dal Santo who broke the deadlock with a double-bounce and long bomb from 50 metres. From the boundary in the pocket, seemingly even more out of bounds than Adam McPhee was a couple of weeks ago, a centreing pass found Riewoldt to add another, and when Montagna put the icing on the cake the Saints had pulled off a remarkable upset win to keep their finals hopes alive.
