Friday night in Melbourne was enveloped in thick fog, and even with the roof at Telstra Dome on the white haze over the ground restricted visibility. A record crowd for an AFL match at Telstra Dome of 53,459 was on hand for a game which promised high-scoring and free-flowing football. After an even first quarter in which the lead changed hands several time, Hawthorn raced away in the second term with a 7 goals to 2 quarter to race to a 43-point lead at the long break. With Lance Franklin injured and forced to withdraw from the side, Jarryd Roughead stepped up to the plate in style with 5 goals before ¾ time to put the Hawks in a strong position. By the last quarter, Carlton’s resistance was gone completely and the Hawks raced away to a 100-point win; their final goal coming through on the siren to give Hawthorn their biggest win ever against the Blues.

The Kangaroos’ golden run at the Gold Coast came to an end on Saturday night as they were humbled by 46 points by a resurgent Adelaide lineup. Despite losing Simon Goodwin before the game, the Crows started stronger with a 5 goals to 1 opening quarter setting the tone for the night. From there the Kangaroos had no way back; although for most of the night the margin was small enough that a quick run by the Kangaroos could have got them back into the contest. But the Adelaide defence held firm all night, while up forward Scott Welsh spearheaded the charge with a run of 5 goals. It was a disappointing result for the Kangaroos, who went into the match knowing they would have to perform on the field if the Gold Coast was to remain a potential future home for the financially embattled club; and the loss is likely to cost the Kangaroos their spot in the top 8.

The Western Bulldogs took their home game against Fremantle to Darwin, and the Top End supporters witnessed an exciting, fast-paced game of football in great conditions. The Dockers went into this match desperate for a win to keep their hopes of a finals campaign on track, and started the stronger with a 7-goal opening quarter. Paul Haselby and captain Peter Bell were giving Fremantle plenty of drive as the Dockers were looking good. But gradually the Bulldogs began to assert themselves, reducing the margin to just 5 points by half-time and getting on top as the game progressed to race to a 26-point win. Brad Johnson did his Brownlow hopes no harm at all with another best-on-ground display, while Scott West and Adam Cooney were also prominent for the Bulldogs. Another highlight for the crowd was the debut for the Bulldogs of Malcolm Lynch, a Tiwi Islander who completed his education in Sydney before being drafted by the Bulldogs; and excited the locals with his pace in the midfield.

Geelong went into their match against Brisbane at Skilled Stadium as the hottest of favourites, and continued their winning run with a 50-point victory. In wet and slippery conditions, Brisbane were already in trouble after failing to kick a goal while kicking with the wind in the first quarter. It was a dour struggle in the first half, but with the Cats kicking all 4 of the goals scored they were already in the box seat. It didn’t take long in the third term for Richard Hadley to get on the board, and a late effort from Jonathan Brown when he ran a full 360 degrees around his opponent before banging home a spectacular bomb from 45 metres out on the boundary line ensured the Lions would win the quarter. But their tired legs running into the wind in the last quarter had no answer to the superior Geelong fitness, and with Joel Selwood in midfield and the Ablett brothers up forward in great form the Cats banged home 6 goals to 1 to ensure a comfortable win and maintain top spot on the ladder. The last goal from Ablett, getting around two opponents before snapping truly with a checkside over his shoulder, was the highlight of the match and gave the Geelong faithful reason to smile after what had been a dour, defensive day.

Port Adelaide captain Warren Tredrea was playing his 200th game for the Power on Sunday evening, and got his milestone game off to a dream start with a goal in the opening minute. It was the beginning of a golden run for the Power, who ran in 7 goals to 1 in a dominant first quarter. Young gun Robert Gray announced himself as a new star player on the footballing stage with 2 strong goals in the first term and another after 3 minutes in the second term. It was a tale of woe for the Bombers, with even runner Paul Dimattina penalised by the umpires for backchat. All the lost confidence that had seen the Power lose 4 on the trot returned to give Port’s premiership captain a milestone game to remember as the Power led by 69 points at the last change; and despite the Bombers attempting to restore some pride in the last quarter the damage was done. The size of the margin impacts not just on this game, but with both sides in the running for a finals berth the potential ramifications of this result could stretch all the way to the finals – and Port’s failure to put the Bombers away in the last quarter could come back to haunt them when the business end of the season comes around.
