Aaron Davey kicked 2 goals during the Demons' fightback
Melbourne said farewell to coach Neale Daniher, who was coaching the Demons for the last time on Friday night after 10 years at the club; but the Demons were strangely tentative early. Instead it was the Bombers, with Hird in the midfield and Lloyd and Lucas up forward who made the front-running as the Bombers led by 37 points at quarter time. But the Demons started chipping away at that lead during the second term, inspired by captain David Neitz who played despite an injury concern out of respect for Daniher. Melbourne hit the front in the second half and looked set for a dream finish, but with just 6 seconds left on the clock Essendon’s Scott Lucas scored to kill the fairytale farewell for the Demon coach.

The Swans’ dismal mid-season run continued when they went down to the ladder-topping Geelong by 18 points at Skilled Stadium on Saturday. In heavy rain, the Cats jumped Sydney with a 5 goals to 2 first quarter and by half-time the margin had blown out to 41 points. But the Swans weren’t finished yet, and with Kirk and Goodes picking up plenty of possessions the margin was reduced to 11 points midway through the last quarter. But Geelong steadied, with Gary Ablett and Steve Johnson working their way through traffic on the run to ensure the Cats stayed in front and maintained top spot on the ladder.

Carlton has only won interstate once since Denis Pagan joined the club in 2003, and their dismal record on the road continued when they were blasted away by Fremantle at Subiaco on Saturday. The Blues led by 7 points at the first change, but that was as far as their resistance would last as the Dockers began to assert themselves in the second term. Jeff Farmer had again been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons recently, but redeemed himself in the best way possible with a best-on-ground performance; while Des Headland and Matthew Pavlich were also prominent for the Dockers. Despite Waite playing a lone hand for the Blues with 5 goals, the final winning margin for the Dockers was a convincing 77 points.

With Robert Harvey marking his 350th game in hostile opposition territory last week, the Saints’ home game against Richmond at Telstra Dome on Saturday night was the chance for their local fans to salute their champion; and salute him they did. Richmond went into this game fresh from their first win of the season, and in a see-sawing contest in which the lead constantly changed hands they presented plenty of chances to record a second success. But in the last term, when the match was in the balance and there to be won, it was Harvey who showed his class with a magnificent performance to get the Saints home. For all their problems this season, the Saints are only one game out of the 8 and still very much in contention.

Michael O'Loughlin tried hard but the Swans were badly beaten
The first two clashes between the Brisbane Lions and Port Adelaide were drawn, and since then the sides have had a history of close results. Another chapter in this history was written on Saturday night at the Gabba. It wasn’t looking that way for much of the game, with the Power looking to have the game under control. But a remarkable surge of 7 goals in a row to the Lions saw them come from nowhere to level the scores with just 5 minutes left on the clock. But a 50 metre penalty to Ebert steadied the Power who defended grimly against a fast-finishing Lions team to take out a 7-point victory; with Daniel Motlop contributing 6 goals for the Power.

Adelaide and West Coast have had some memorable battles over the years, and another one looked to be in the making during the first half. The lead changed several times during some electrifying football. But early in the third term, Adelaide lost Nathan Bassett to an ankle injury, and without his contribution the Crows lost their run and the Eagles got on top. The Eagles were without Chris Judd, but as the game went on they gradually asserted themselves, with Mark Seaby, Daniel Kerr and big ruckman Dean Cox all prominent.

Glen Archer was marking his 300th game for the Kangaroos; and his team-mates raced out of the blocks, keen to put on a special performance for the player known as the Shinboner of the Century. Particularly impressive was Drew Petrie, who grabbed everything that went inside the forward 50 to score 6 goals for the quarter. The Kangaroos led the shellshocked Bulldogs by 34 points by half-time, and the Bulldogs’ attempts to work their way back into the contest after the break were not helped by an inaccurate 5.12 for the second half. But in the end it was a 26-point victory for the Kangaroos, a result that sees them move into the top 8 and, like Robert Harvey the week before, ensured a great player had a milestone game to remember.

The sellout clash between Hawthorn and Collingwood at Telstra Dome on Sunday evening proved to be worthy of its blockbuster status with a magnificent game of football being played. The momentum fluctuated during the night, with both sides’ running midfielders playing solid games. But when the game was tight at the end and the running players tired, the height of the Hawks’ tall marking forwards was to prove the difference; with Lance Franklin and Jarryd Roughead marking and goaling at critical times to give Hawthorn the edge. Collingwood’s Alan Didak, after a tough week with speculation about his off-field activities, had little influence over the game other than his two goals. But in the end the Hawks took out an 8-point win to consolidate their top-2 position.
