The round started on Friday night, where St Kilda kept their fading finals hopes alive with a thrilling 2-point win over Adelaide. The Crows made the early-front running, with the first 5 goals; but an ankle injury halted Mark Riccuito’s run and the Saints capitalised, hitting the lead shortly before half-time. The momentum of the game swung back and forth, but it was the Saints who held the advantage when the final siren sounded. The result sees the Crows dip out of the top 8 on percentage, while St Kilda are just 1 game behind.

The clash between Geelong and Collingwood at the MCG attracted over 85,000 fans through the gates, and they weren’t to be disappointed at what was an exciting contest. But in the end, Geelong’s winning run extended to 10 games when the Cats completed a 16-point win. There was only a kick in it at half-time, but in a low-scoring game the ladder leaders always had the edge; with full-back Matthew Scarlett dominant in a best-on-ground performance.

Reigning premiers West Coast’s form slump continued when they were thrashed by Port Adelaide at AAMI Stadium. In front of an excited home crowd, the Power were inaccurate early but dominated possession around the ground and had too many avenues to goal for the Eagles to match. Motlop, Westhoff and Chad Cornes each scored 4 for the Power in a percentage-booster that sees the Power leap-frog Collingwood into 5th on the ladder. West Coast’s Chris Judd played, but still showed signs of his recent injury worries; and the Eagles will consider fast-tracking Ben Cousins’ return ahead of their clash against the Swans next weekend.

Essendon were without James Hird and a host of others when they took on the Western Bulldogs at Telstra Dome on Saturday night; and early on it looked to be a procession for the Bulldogs as they raced through 4 goals in the opening 10 minutes. But the Bombers fought back, with Adam Ramanauskas in just his 2nd game back from cancer surgery leading the way, to hold a narrow quarter-time lead. But when Brad Johnson restored the lead for the Bulldogs in the opening minute of the second term they were never headed again. Brad Johnson did his Brownlow chances no harm at all, contributing 5 goals to go to the head of the goalkicking ladder; while former triple Brisbane premiership player Jason Akermanis was also prominent for the Bulldogs.

Brisbane's Luke Power played a strong game as the Lions jumped Melbourne at the Gabba

Melbourne sold their home game against Brisbane to the Gabba; a move that gave the Demons some much-needed funds and Lions’ members an additional game in Brisbane. A crowd of nearly 23,000 was on hand, and voiced their approval as the Lions jumped Melbourne early to race to a 35-point quarter time lead. By the time the Demons got their game going, it was too late for them to work their way back into the contest. The Lions’ fightback over the past 2 weeks sees them 6 points outside the finals and still just in contention for September action. Jonathan Brown was best on ground, dominating with a 6-goal haul.

Carlton haven’t won in Sydney since Ron Barassi’s first game as Swans coach in 1993, but the struggling Blues started the stronger on Sunday with the first 4 goals of the game; and another to O’hAilpin on the quarter-time siren gave them the lead at the first change. But their hopes were short-lived, with the superior form and fitness of the home side winning out. Ruckman Peter Everitt played his best game so far in red and white with a best-on-ground performance; while Barry Hall’s return to form with 4 goals was also valuable for the Swans in the leadup to next weekend’s grand final replay against the Eagles at Subiaco.

Richmond started solidly against Hawthorn to hold a narrow quarter-time lead, but from there it was Hawthorn all the way, the Hawks cruising to a 53-point win. The tall forward combination of Jarryd Roughead and Lance Franklin has caught many sides out this year, the height on the forward line sailing over any floods the opposition defence serve up. The struggling Richmond defence had no answer, in another dismal day at Tigerland that sees the yellow and black side seemingly certain for the wooden spoon in 2007.

The closest game of the round was left till last, with the Kangaroos holding out Fremantle to win by just 4 points at Subiaco. With Shannon Grant, Brent Harvey and Adam Simpson all getting plenty of the ball, the Kangaroos again showed the character that has made this a season to remember. Against all odds, the Shinboners are third on the ladder; while Fremantle have slumped to 13th on the ladder, their finals hopes all but extinguished and coach Chris Connolly virtually certain to be given the flick at the end of the season.
