Could 2007 be Year of the Cat? Its looking more and more so every week as the Geelong side continues to take all before them. In the opening round the Bulldogs defeated the Cats, but it didnt take long for it to become clear there would be no repeat this time. The Cats blew the game away in the first quarter, banging home 8 goals to 3 to set up a lead the Bulldogs were never a chance to pull back. With James Bartel, Joel Corey, Gary Ablett and Corey Enright picking up possessions at will, the Cats raced away to a 56-point half-time lead before taking their foot off the gas. Cameron Mooney was again in fine form up forward with 4 goals. The only down-side of this game was a knee injury to David Wojcinski, with tests in the next few days to determine the extent of the injury.

Collingwood led by 39 points at half-time in their match against Essendon at the MCG on Saturday, and were looking comfortable. But a determined surge by the Bombers saw them run through 8 goals to 4 in the third term and early in the last cut the margin to just 9 points. But try as they did, there was no way for the Bombers to get any more; and the Magpies steadied with late goals to Anthony Rocca, Leon Davis and Johh Fraser put the result beyond doubt. It was a result that keeps Collingwood very much still in the running for a top-4 spot; but one which will make it difficult for the Bombers to qualify for the finals.

Its happened so many times, but yet again a new coach mid-season has seen a struggling team lift to a rare victory. It happened again on Saturday, after Mark Harvey recorded a dream start to his coaching career, guiding Fremantle to a 25-point victory over a stunned Adelaide at AAMI Stadium. The Crows were made to pay for their wastefulness in the first quarter, when they had twice as many scoring shots as the Dockers but still trailed at the first change. But this was to be the Dockers day, with Matthew Pavlich leading the way with 5 goals. It was a home loss that shocked Adelaide, and sees the Crows still stuck outside the top 8 and, with a tough draw to come, their finals hopes are looking shaky.

When St Kilda took on Hawthorn earlier in the season, it was a negative, mistake-infested game; and Saturday night at the Dome saw more of the same. But this time it was St Kilda who were in control, leading at every change to record a 17-point victory. From a position of doom and gloom just a month ago, the Saints have won 4 of their last 5 games, and are now only out of the top 8 on percentage; with Riewoldt again prominent. But for the Hawks, it was another flat and lacklustre result, and following on from their thrashing by Adelaide and unconvincing result against Richmond, its a worrying form slump for the early-season surprise packet that sees their top-4 position in jeopardy.

All the talk before the grand final rematch at Subiaco on Saturday night was on the return of Ben Cousins after his drug rehab treatment. Cousins monopolised the attention, with the Channel 10 commentators and pictures so often overlooking that there was a match with 43 other players also taking part. But from the time Cousins came on, he justified his attention, barely looking like hed ever been away with 38 touches in a best-on-ground performance. Cousins performance played a key part in getting the Eagles over the line in what would end up being another thriller between these two sides. After the Eagles looked to have the game wrapped up when they led by 35 points late in the third term, the Swans never gave up; but were unable to get back enough to regain the lead.

After 7 weeks without a win, Brisbane extended their winning streak to 3 games with a comprehensive 117-point drubbing of Carlton at the Gabba. Jonathan Brown was sensational up forward, contributing 10 goals, a record for the merged entity since the Bears and Fitzroy joined forces in 1997. A 16 goals to 2 second half turned an already one-sided match into a demolition, delighting the local crowd and giving genuine hope that a Lion revival may not be far away. But for Carlton, their fifth loss in a row has killed their early-season hope; and speculation continues to mount that Denis Pagans reign as Blues coach is coming to a swift and painful end.

Port Adelaide made their 250th game since joining the AFL in 1997 an occasion to remember but gave Richmond spearhead Matthew Richardson a disappointing day for his 250th when the Power were 55 points too good for Richmond at the MCG on Sunday. In an entertaining and high-scoring shootout first quarter, Port Adelaide ran through 9 goals to 7; but 6 unanswered goals to the Power in the second gave them a lead that Richmond were unable to peg back. It was a result that maintains Ports position in the top 8, and with a good draw in the run home a top 4 position is still a distinct possibility. But for Richmond, it was another disappointment in a season of many.

Hard to believe after all the gloomy pre-season predictions, but the Kangaroos are up to 2nd on the ladder after a 64-point flogging of Melbourne in the Sunday twilight game. After a positive start to the game saw the Kangaroos lead by 28 points at half time, four unanswered goals in the first 10 minutes of the third term blew the game away and the Demons from there had no hope of getting back into the contest. Corey Jones with 4 goals led the way up forward, but it was a solid team effort from a side that has shown remarkable fighting spirit in 2007; bouncing back from defeats in their first 3 matches to rise into a position where they may just be able to challenge for an unlikely premeirship.
