The A-League pre-season trials continued over the weekend, the highlight being Wellington Phoenix recording their first competitive victory. The new team, preparing for their debut season, stunned Sydney FC with a 3-0 win that took them to the top of Group B and relegated the highly-fancied Sydney side to bottom of the group.
Shane Smeltz got the Phoenix off to a great start after 13 minutes, and a shocking defensive blunder a minute later saw Mark Rudan deflect a Vaughan Coveny shot into his own net. Smeltz's 89th minute bomb put the icing on the cake.
In other results, Adelaide United and Perth Glory played a 1-1 draw, as did Central Coast Mariners and Queensland Roar. An upset took place in Geelong, where Newcastle Jets recorded a 1-0 win over reigning champions Melbourne Victory.
