A-League Season III is coming, and the weekend saw all 8 teams in action in the pre-season cup trials.
Wellington Phoenix, in their first competitive game, travelled to Bluetongue Stadium to take on the Central Coast Mariners in front of a surprisingly good crowd of 8,136; but it was a disastrous start for the newest franchise when Alex Wilkinson found the Phoenix’ net in just the second minute. Adam Kwasnik added another on the half-hour; and the Phoenix were cut down to 10 men on the hour when Stephen O’Dor was sent off for a second yellow. But the Phoenix defended strongly, holding the score to 2-0 and showing more positive signs for coach Ricki Herbert as the match unfolded.
A positive start for Perth Glory at Port Macquarie, when Jamie Harnwell’s effort shortly after half-time gave them a 1-0 victory over Newcastle Jets.
In other matches, Melbourne Victory rested many of their big-name players for their clash against Adelaide United in Tasmania and it took a late effort from Danny Allsopp to give the reigning premiers a 1-1 draw. At Maroochydore, Queensland Roar and Sydney FC played a scoreless draw.

Melbourne Victory 1 (D Allsopp 77) drew Adelaide United 1 (T Dodd 9). At Aurora Stadium, Launceston. Crowd – 10,000.
