The Asian Cup came to Indonesia, and the locals there got behind the tournament in a way that the Thai and Vietnamese did not - with a great crowd on hand at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium when Indonesia took on Bahrain.
And it didn't take long for the locals to have something to celebrate, when Budi Sudarsono beat an offside trap, and with only the keeper to beat slotted the ball into the Bahraini net. But just 13 minutes later, against the run of play, Bahrain got the goal back when Abdullah Omar had a shot which was saved; but the ball rebounded to Sayed Mahmood Jalal standing unmarked at point blank range.
1-1 at the break, and for the next 15 minutes it looked likely to stay that way. But then Indonesia made their move. A shot from Firman was deflected into the goalpost, and striker Bambang Pamungkas was there to slot home the winner. Bahrain continued to attack for the last half hour, looking for the equaliser; and one shot went agonisingly close and hit the goalpost. But this was Indonesia's night, and the great crowd on hand had plenty to party about.
The action then continued in Kuala Lumpur where Malaysia took on China. But there was to be no home side triumph here as the locals were outclassed 5-1 by the Chinese. Han Peng got the first for China after 15 minutes, and from there it was a rout with Malaysia struggling to get any cohesive game plan going. They did score a belated goal through Indra Putra Mahayuddin, but Wang Dong's 90th minute strike put the icing on the cake.
Indonesia 2 (Budi Sudarsono 14, Bambang Pamungkas 64) d Bahrain 1 (Sayed Mahmood Jalal 27).
China 5 (Han Peng 15, 55, Shao Jiayi 36, Wang Dong 51, 90) d Malaysia 1 (Indra Putra Mahayuddin 72)
Group C Standings - China 3 ( 4), Iran 0 (0), Uzbekistan 0 (0), Malaysia 0 (-4).
Group D Standings - Indonesia 3 ( 1), Korea 0 (0), South Korea 0 (0), Bahrain 0 (-1),
