The last of the co-hosts was eliminated from the Asian Cup when Iraq were 2-0 too good for Vietnam in their quarter-final clash.
Iraq raced out of the blocks, with Younis Mahmood's header putting the war-torn middle eastern country ahead in just the 2nd minute. Dominating possession, the Iraqis could easily have added more; but Vietnam held firm to keep the scoreboard to 1-0 at the break. But any hopes of snatching an unlikely equaliser disappeared after 66 minutes when Mahmood booted a free over the wall and into the Vietnamese net. A simple chance just a few minutes later should have seen Mahmood complete a hat-trick, but Vietnam keeper Duong Hong Son somehow got a hand to it to keep the shot out.
Iraq's win will see them take on the winner of the Iran v Korea clash; while Japan, after their win over Australia, will play the winner of Saudi Arabia v Uzbekistan.
