The Asian Champions League football tournament opened on Saturday night in Bangkok when host nation Thailand took on Olympic medallists Iraq. The first tournament to be hosted by 4 countries, wet weather kept many fans away and the tournament opened to the sight of bays of empty seats.
But it didn't take long for the locals who did arrive to be rewarded, as in the 6th minute the referee pointed to the penalty spot and Sutee Suksomkit slotted it home. But that goal was to fire the Iraqis into action; and an equaliser came on 32 minutes when Younis Mahmood scored off a header.
And 1-1 was how it stayed, Thailand had the better of the play in the second half, but were unable to find a winner. The 1-1 draw kicked off action in group A.
More action in Group A takes place tonight in Bangkok when Australia, participating in their first Asian Cup, are the hottest of favourites to win when take on Oman.
Thailand 1 (Sutee Suksomkit 6 min pen) drew Iraq 1 (Younis Mahmood 32)
