Another captivating day of football in the Asian Cup; with every team having played their first game and the second round of matches getting under way.
After a scoreless first half, Thailand substitute Pipat Tonkanya found himself in perfect position to receive a pass from point blank range and pop the first one through after 70 minutes. A second was to come just a few minutes later, Tonkanya receiving a perfectly-timed header to bang home a goal that ensured a win for the co-hosts.
After everyone in Group A had a 1-1 draw in their first game, Thailand's victory takes them to the top of the group. It raises the stakes for Australia. If the Socceroos can defeat Iraq tonight, it sets up a fascinating clash against Thailand for top spot when the two sides will meet on Monday night. But any other result will put the Socceroos up against it in the race for a quarter-final position.
In the other game of the round, at My Dinh Stadium in Hanoi, Vietnam got to an early lead when Phan Thanh Binh lobbed a shot over the advancing Qatari keeper. But Qatar proved again their giant-killer status when Sebastian Quintana headed home an equaliser with just 11 minutes to go.
Australia returns to the pitch tonight, taking on Iraq in a must-win match. Kickoff is at 8:20pm Sydney time.
Thailand 2 (Pipat Thonkanya 70, 78) d Oman 0
Vietnam 1 (Phan Thanh Binh 32) drew Qatar 1 (Sebastian Quintana 1).
Group A Standings - Thailand 4 ( 2), Australia 1 (0), Iraq 1 (0), Oman 1 (-2).
Group B Standings - Vietnam 4 ( 2), Qatar 2 (0), Japan 1 (0), UAE 0 (-2).
