For months now it has been well publicised. The fate of renowned larrikin and Carlton spear head Brendan Fevola cold be hanging in the balance, at least as far as the Carlton part is concerned. Yes indeed ever since that infamous night, at that dud of a boxing match the rumours have spread like wild fire that the former Coleman Medalist may have been packing his bags with red and white and heading on a plane to Sydney. Curiously though, it seems at times that ‘Fev’ himself has been the one providing the oxygen upon which ever fire thrives. Not necessarily pronouncing the rumours as truth but just, ever so gently, fanning the flames.
I’ve found it down right confusing that when the whispers of a possible move north starting creeping along the grapevine, the big man nor his manager did nothing to stamp out the rapidly strengthening sparks, then when he grew tired of toying with the media he came out and denounced them for reporting a perfectly juicy story. When the a carcass such as that is placed in front of the media, they will swarm upon it like vultures, he knows this better then anyone. Therefore It seems to me odd that one with a profile such as his would just sit back, quietly allowing the gossip to fester and not doing anything about it until he felt like it. Much like letting a child do something naughty within you line of vision, not intervening and then punishing them for something you could have prevented. Sorry mate that’s not how it works.
He had numerous chances to quell the media frenzy, on the ‘Footy Show’ and during various other minglings with the Journo’s but he did nothing. Whenever questioned on the issue he would give only half answers, or change the topic. Not a word to defend his honour; and now he is left clutching at whatever miniscule shred of it remains. If this was a pathetic ploy to attract the attention of other clubs, an attempt at some sort of masculine show to bait other teams, as the male peacock would a potential partner, it failed dismally.
I ask once more, what does he have to gain from such a display? For many moons now the Carlton Football Club has stuck by him, and this is how he repays them? By showing little if any genuine commitment to the club which has served him so well, even when he could not be said to have done the same. Throughout the Brendan Fevola rollercoaster ride the club has had to endure many traumas which they can attribute to him. There are the numerous drinking escapades, the assault in Ireland, the time he actually pissed in public. Oh and let’s not forget that little period in 2007 when he just plain didn’t seem to care about his footy anymore and couldn’t agree with the coach about anything. Ill concede he’s kicked many bags here and there and played some stellar games along the way but has his treatment of his club of late been just….one wonders.
In short, it appears that Brendan toyed with the papers, his club and others, but most importantly the fans this year. Keeping in mind there’s still a few rounds left. He’s had many a flirtatious gaze at the rest of the AFL, but now that he wants to stay at Princes Park, one wonders, will his club take back their unfaithful lover or hang him out to dry in trade week. I suppose time will tell.
