English Heavyweights Collide

The four heavyweights of the English Premier League meet each other in a few hours with Manchester United travelling to Anfield to meet their arch enemy Liverpool while the Arsenal host Chelsea at Emirates Stadium.

Manchester United faces their hardest assignment at Anfield since the inception of the Premier League. Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez has the Reds playing great attacking football consistently. The adaptable attacking set-up involving Kuyt, Crouch, Torres and now Xabi Alonso after returning from injury will be a handful for Manchester United’s back four. Australian star Harry Kewell has also returned to the Liverpool first team in fine form and has added a new dimension to the Liverpool attacking menace. Steven Gerrard is the supplier of ball to the attackers and must be closely marked by United with Michael Carrick favoured to get the job.

Manchester United’s firepower, however, is more than a match for Liverpool’s with Cristiano Ronald in fine form and the ever-present spectre for Premier League defences, Wayne Rooney being joined by Carlos Tevez and Manchester United stalwart Ryan Giggs in supplying the goals. I think this game may be an end-to-end classic with a scoring draw to be the result. Liverpool will start slight favourites over Manchester United but the draw is excellent value at odds of about $3.10 available in Australia.

The Arsenal plays host to London Rivals Chelsea in what promises to be another tight affair. League leaders Arsenal surprisingly lost to struggling Middlesbrough last week whilst Chelsea have not lost a game in any competition since being defeated 2-0 by Manchester United in September. This should be another pulsating affair of the highest class. Chelsea are currently hampered by the injuries to class players like Didier Drogba and Michael Ballack and would be hoping Andriy Shevchenko can continue to re-discover his scoring touch which has deserted him since his move from Milan. Australian bookies have the Arsenal at about the 2.45 mark and that may be the way to go. Arsene Wenger would have been furious about last week’s loss and will have the Arsenal players firing on all cylinders against a Chelsea side that is lacking a couple of high profile stars. The Arsenal for me.

Good Punting.
