Experienced Broncos Climb Over Roosters

Tonight saw the Broncos defeat a courageous and hard hitting Roosters outfit. The opening exchanges between the two teams made everyone aware that September football had arrived. This was no more evident than when Broncos' prop Joel Clinton felt the brunt of Mark O'Meley's shoulder in the early minutes of the Friday night spectacular.
The Roosters dominated the first half with solid defense and the majority of possession. The game was in the balance early when Darren Lockyer's pass was intercepted by Iosia Soliola leading to the opening try in the 14th minute. Ten minutes later Braith Anasta put Anthony Tupou through a hole for their second. In true Broncos fashion, they were rewarded for their ability to stay with the Roosters when Peter Wallace crossed the line in the 31st minute with a great individual effort. For the second time this year the Roosters were leading the Broncos going in to the half time break.
Whatever was said in the Broncos dressing room during the half time break certainly worked as they produced one of the tries of the season just three minutes after the interval. The ball traveled from deep within their own half, through thirteen sets of hands to end with a short Burst from Denan Kemp to cruise over the line.
After the physical start to the game the Roosters were beginning to show weakness on the fringes. Lockyer and Justin Hodges started to make continual progress through the ruck. The tiring Roosters then let in two tries with David Stagg(50) and Tonie Carroll(61) busting through the defense close to the line. In a typical tradesman like performance the Broncos then closed down the game despite some late flare from their opposition.
The game certainly proved that the Broncos are in the fight for the title. The combination of Wayne Bennett and Darren Lockyer in charge of a full strength Broncos squad just gives the same scent that was evident in 2006. Melbourne and Manly have a third contender. Final score: Broncos 24 - Roosters 16.
