Hawthorn probably should have won by more then the meager 15 points it beat Freo by tonight but I suppose their percentage is already high enough (what with the 104 point belting of Melbourne the previous week.) but thats still know excuse to let you foot of the peddle.
The dockers made a late surge, after their deficit grew to as many as 31 points early in the 3rd. What with injuries to Young and Dew they can be forgiven for somewhat loosing their way as far as stamina was concerned. Though the margin is slim I don't think there was ever any real doubt that Hawthorn had won the game long before the last.
When Roughead and Franklin both kick 4 and a number of others chip in with healthy contribution the Hawks are always set to fair well. In fact one of the major reasons they did so was because I think Freo were trying to stop Buddy from getting 6 or 7 and in the process lost sight of Roughy, allowing him to sneak for some reasonably easy goals.
The young kids looked good, Stokes and Rioli providing that slick foot foot speed and crumbing that would have been considered Hawthorns weakness up front over the last few years. While Travis Tuck was extremely promising in mid-field, racking up numerous possessions, as well as goaling at a crucial point in the match On the other side of the coin, first-gamers Mayne and Rhys Palmer seemed jittery to begin with but slowly began to adapt to the pace of the game. They kicked goals late in the game as a consolation for the determined Dockers.
All in all, you wouldn't call it a comprehensive win for the brown and gold, but it was a victory all the same and one that places them on top of the table, with a very encouraging 181%.
They easily steered their way through the purple haze tonight
