Manlys stint at the top of the table came to an end at the foot of the Mountains on Friday night when the Sea Eagles went down 22-16 to Penrith. Michael Robertson went over in the opening minute to put the visitors off to a flying start, but after a first half double by Nick Youngquest the Panthers regained the initiative and led 22-10 shortly after half-time. Manly pressed the line, and Watmough finally crossed over, but there was to be no equaliser for the Sea Eagles and Penrith celebrated a victory to remember.
Penrith 22 (Tries N Youngquest 2, T Puletua, R Wesser. Goals P Wallace 3) Manly 16 (Tries M Robertson, M Orford, A Watmough. Goals J Lyon 2). Crowd: 11,325 at CUA Stadium, Penrith.
Brisbanes return to form with a 71-6 demolition of Newcastle the week before turned out to be an illusion as the Broncos returned to the losers list, going down 11-4 to St George/Illawarra at Oki Jubilee Stadium. Steve Michaels went over for the Broncos after 13 minutes, but Morris and Nightingale replied in quick succession to put the Dragons in front at half-time. Playing his first game for the Dragons after a midweek transfer from the Roosters, Jamie Sowards field goal was the only score in a tense second half.
St George/Illawarra 11 (Tries J Morris, J Nightingale. Goals J Soward. Field Goals J Soward). Brisbane 4 (Tries S Michaels). Crowd: 10,302 at Oki Jubilee Stadium.
The Roosters moved their home game against Newcastle to Central Coast Stadium, but it was a predominantly pro-Newcastle crowd that attended the match. And the crowd had plenty to smile about as the Knights took home the points. But it was a struggle for the Knights after leading 10-4 at half-time, converted tries in quick succession to Anasta and Pearce and a penalty goal to Craig Fitzgibbon gave the Roosters a 18-4 advantage. But late in the match, converted tries to Tighe and Hinton got the Knights home, a welcome return to form for the Novacastrians after a massive loss to Brisbane the round before.
Newcastle 22 (Tries J McManus, C Paterson, B Tighe, N Hinton. Goals C Paterson 3) Sydney Roosters 18 (Tries A Minichiello, B Anasta, M Pearce. Goals C Fitzgibbon 3). Crowd: 11,263 at Bluetongue Stadium.
North Queensland consolidated their position in the top 4 with a 26-24 point win over Cronulla at Dairy Farmers Stadium. The Cowboys were looking comfortable with a 16-0 lead at half-time, but the tide was to turn quickly as the Sharks ran in 4 converted tries in 18 minutes to take the advantage. But hopes of the Sharks for a win on the road were dashed as Ty Williams scored a late double to enable the Cowboys to sneak over the line.
North Queensland 26 (Tries T Williams 2, N Sweeney, S Minto, M Scott. Goals J Thurston 3) Cronulla 24 (Tries G Bird 2, B Pomeroy, I de Gois. Goals L Covell 4). Crowd: 20,075 at Dairy Farmers Stadium.
Melbourne returned to the top of the NRL ladder with a convincing 26-10 win over Souths at Olympic Park. It was locked at 6-6 at half-time, but a strong second half saw the Storm run in 3 tries to 1 and the result never looked in doubt. The boot of Cameron Smith, kicking 5 from 5, was also instrumental in keeping the Rabbitohs out of the contest.
Melbourne 26 (Tries S Turner, M King, M Geyer, G Inglis. Goals C Smith 5). South Sydney 10 (Tries D Widders, S Hegarty. Goals N Merrett). Crowd: 11,121 at Olympic Park.
Gold Coast continued their outstanding home record in their debut season, running out 28-8 winners over Canberra on Sunday afternoon. Petersen started the procession in the third minute, and it was all Gold Coast in a scintillating first half that saw them lead 28-0 at half-time. The Raiders scored two second-half tries to add some respectability, but it was too little too late as the Titans marched into the top 8.
Gold Coast 28 (Tries - M Petersen 2, J Webster, J Lewis, M Rogers. Goals M Rogers 4). Canberra 8 (Tries M Zillman, B Jones). Crowd: 13,644 at Carrara Stadium.
Pressure had been on the Bulldogs in the lead-up to this game, with speculation mounting about the future of coach Steve Folkes. But as they have done before, the Bulldogs rose to the occasion when their backs were against the wall, taking out a 40-20 win over the Warriors at Mt Smart Stadium. Sonny Bill Williams ran in 2 tries and Hazem El Mazri landed 6 conversions in a dominant display that keeps the embattled Bulldogs within striking distance of the final 8.
Bulldogs 40 (Tries S Williams 2, L Te Maari, J Hickey, K Cleal, R Maitua, B Roberts. Goals H El Mazri 6). NZ Warriors 20 (Tries L Swann, S Mannering, P Ah Vann, J Ropati. Goals T Martin 2). Crowd: 10,041 at Mt Smart Stadium.
Wests Tigers hosted Parramatta on Monday night in front of a sensational crowd at Telstra Stadium. But it was the Eels who made the front-running, leading 16-2 at half-time; the highlight being a sensational 60 metre running try from Jarryd Hayne after being set up by Fui Fui Moi Moi. The smashing continued in the second half, as the Eels raced away with the game to consolidate their winning streak with a comprehensive 38-8 victory.
Parramatta 38 (Tries F Mateo 2, E Grothe, J Hayne, B Finch, B Smith, L Burt. Goals L Burt 5). Wests Tigers 8 (Tries C Lawrence. Goals - B Hodgson 2). Crowd: 22,245 at Telstra Stadium.
