South Sydney continued their midseason revival with a 28-25 win over Newcastle at Energy Australia Stadium on Friday night. Nigel Vagana and Roy Asotasi got the Rabbitohs off to a flying start, and a 12-0 lead after 12 minutes. But the Knights fought back, with MacDougall, Carmont and Vuna giving the locals a 16-12 lead at half-time. Further tries to Paterson and McManus, even though neither were converted, gave the Knights a 24-12 advantage and a field goal to Luke Walsh should have seen them home. But instead a late surge by the Rabbitohs saw Jeremy Smith, Asotasi and Ben Rogers cross the line to see Souths take out a win that looked unlikely just 10 minutes earlier.

South Sydney 28 Tries – R Asotasi 2, N Vagana, J Smith, B Rogers. Goals – R Simmonds 2, I Luke 2. Newcastle 25 Tries – A MacDougall, G Carmont, G Vuna, C Paterson, J McManus. Goals – C Paterson 2. Field Goals – L Walsh.
Referee – S Hampstead. Crowd – 16,320 at Energy Australia Stadium.

Gold Coast’s dream run came to an end when the NRL’s newest franchise tasted defeat at the hands of the NZ Warriors at Carrara on Saturday night. Brett Delaney’s converted try was the only score of the first half, but the Warriors finally showed themselves capable of delivering on the talent they have with a dominant second-half display. The boot of Michael Witt was also influential, with the former Sea Eagle scoring 5 from 5.

New Zealand Warriors 22 Tries – S Rapira, W McKinnon, G Gatis. Goals – M Witt 5. Gold Coast 6 Tries – B Delaney. Goals – M Rogers.
Referee – S Hayne. Crowd – 17,608 at Carrara Stadium.

Down and out just a few weeks ago, the Brisbane Broncos powered their way into the top 8 with a 24-16 victory over Penrith at CUA Stadium on Saturday night. Even without their string of Origin stars, the Broncos had too many guns and overpowered a disappointing Penrith side that finds themselves stuck at the bottom of the ladder. The Broncos raced out of the block with David Stagg going over in just the 3rd minute, and further tries to Ennis and Parker gave the Broncos a 18-0 lead. But the Panthers fought back before and after the break, and after Jennings, Daniela and Tony Puletua had gone over the scoreline was back to 18-16 and the locals had reason to hope for a comeback. But their hopes were dashed when Darius Boyd crossed the line for the Broncos, who then hung on through a scoreless last 24 minutes.
Brisbane 24 Tries – D Stagg, M Ennis, C Parker, D Boyd. Goals – C Parker 4. Penrith 16 Tries – M Jennings, G Daniela, T Puletua. Goals – M Youngquest 2.
Referee – G Bader. Crowd – 8,553 at Credit Union Australia Stadium.

With the temperature at –2 degrees and a southerly buster blowing in from the Snowy Mountains, the fans who braved the freezing conditions witnessed a game that would go down to the wire. Todd Carney returned to the Raiders for the first time after his recent off-field indiscretions, and his kicking game was influential in keeping the home side in the contest. Scores were locked at 16-16 after 50 minutes, but a try to Paul Whatuira, his second of the game, gave the visitors the lead. For the last 20 minutes the Raiders attacked the line, but whatever they tried the Tigers had answers to and were able to hang on for dear life to take out an important victory.
Wests Tigers 22 Tries – P Whatuira 2, J Morris, C Lawrence. Goals – R Farah 3. Canberra 16 Tries – D Milne 2, D Tilse. Goals – T Carney 2.
Referee – S Clark. Crowd – 12,598 at Canberra Stadium.

While the Storm enjoyed a week off, Manly ensured they would go 2 games clear on top of the ladder after suffering a shock 26-22 defeat to lowly St George/Illawarra. It was 6-6 at the break, but a 4 tries to 3 shootout in the second half saw the locals scrape over the line. Despite having been at the club only a few weeks, Jamie Soward has already shown his value to the Dragons, and ran in a double here. Beau Scott also scored twice during the Dragons’ second-half runaway. Manly continued to chip away, and a try to Chris Hicks with just 3 minutes to go cut the margin to just 4 points. But with the match ending in strips and knock-ons, there was to be no miracle winner for the Sea Eagles.
St George/Illawarra 26 Tries – J Soward 2, B Scott 2, B Creagh. Goals – J Soward 3. Manly 22 Tries – G Stewart, A Cuthbertson, N Bradley, C Hicks. Goals – M Orford 3.
Referee – T Archer. Crowd – 11,958 at Oki Jubilee Stadium.

It was the Sonny Bill Williams show at Telstra Stadium on Monday night as the Bulldogs took on the Roosters. The New Zealand international dominated, scoring a double and having a hand in several others. He was unlucky not to score a hat-trick, with the video ref denying him another try that was just millimetres short of the line. Phelps and Hickey also scored doubles as the Bulldogs asserted themselves as finals challengers. With Hazem El Mazri absent on Origin duty, Brett Sherwin proved a handy fill-in with the goalkicking boot with 5 goals. It was another dismal performance from the Roosters, who unless something remarkable happens between now and September will miss the finals for the third year in a row.
Bulldogs 38 Tries – S B Williams 2, C Phelps 2, J Hickey 2, D Millard. Goals – B Sherwin 5. Sydney Roosters 6 Tries – L Paea. Goals – C Fitzgibbon.
Referee – J Maxwell. Crowd – 20,772 at Telstra Stadium.
