Category: Australia vs India 1st test
Day one of the first Test in India saw Ricky Ponting dominate proceedings. The Australia captain has put his team on the front foot on his way to his record breaking 16th century as captain.
No one could deny the toughness of Ponting as he walked to the crease to face only the fourth ball of the day. Matthew Hayden was dismissed in the first over which brought the world's best number three out into India's hostile Bangalore arena.
With one wicket down and no runs on the board, Simon Katich and Ponting had to buckle down and quiet the Indian crowd. The two showed great determination and it wasn't until Australia had 166 runs on the board that Katich was dismissed for 66.
Ponting, who had never scored a century in India went on to score 123, his 36th career hundred. Apart from some early nerves against Ishant Sharma, the Tasmanian produced an almost flawless innings. The only disappointing thing for Ponting is that Harbhajan Singh dismissed him for the 9th time in his career.
Michael Hussey gave great support to his captain and will commence batting on day 2 on 46 not out. His partner will be Shane Watson after Michael Clarke was given out LBW in the last over of the day.
Australia hold a slight advantage heading in to the second day of play. At 4/254 they are planning to post a total of 400 or more.
Harbhajan Singh and India will be trying to improve their bowling and hope the long Australian tale collapses.
Shane Watson who is finally free from injury will be trying to cement his spot in the team after the selectors have shown him such loyalty. As Australia has entered a weaker bowling era, Watson has the opportunity to be a spark in the side as the world's best all-rounder.
