Show Us Your Tips - AFL, June 15-17

5 out of 8 last week – barely a pass, but in this unpredictable season it’s better than some. With a split round, there’s only 5 games this weekend.

Carlton v Hawthorn (Telstra Dome, Friday 7:30pm)
The Blues have hit some form in the last couple of weeks, booting big scores to get up in high-scoring shootouts against the Bulldogs and Port. Interestingly Fevola hasn’t had a huge influence, but the Blues have found plenty of avenues to goal. This week they take on a Hawthorn side that was unable to keep up with the defence of the Swans and, despite a late rush, fell over by 9 points. Neither side went into the season with great expectations, but the Hawks in particular have exceeded pre-season predictions. But confidence is a key factor in a surprise element team – and it remains to be seen how much the loss to the Swans affects the Hawks’ confidence. But winning form is the best form, and Carlton have it. Carlton to win here.

Kangaroos v Adelaide (Carrara Stadium, Saturday 7:10pm)
The Kangaroos’ push to the Gold Coast has another instalment here, as the blue and whites head out of the Melbourne cold for some mild Queensland conditions. A lot of the interest in this game will be in what size crowd attends – with speculation continuing of a possible relocation, the interest of the people of the Gold Coast in whether they want a team will be tested. On the field, the Kangaroos won ugly against St Kilda last week, but at least they got the result. Which is more than can be said for Adelaide – the Crows are barely hanging on to a spot in the 8 after being shut down by Geelong. It’s been a disappointing season for the Crows, with injuries being a killer, and it’s hard to see them getting up in this one – Kangaroos easily.

Western Bulldogs v Fremantle (Darwin, Saturday 7:40pm)
AFL football makes its way to the Top End, with the Bulldogs playing their home game against Fremantle in Darwin. Stakes are high in this game, with both sides out of the 8 and needing a victory to stay in contention. The Bulldogs returned to the winning circle in style last week, with Jason Akermanis starring in their victory over the Lions at the Gabba. Fremantle also got up, unconvincingly against Richmond, but are showing some signs of re-discovering the form that got them into the top 4 last season. With Des Headland in particular in good form, the Dockers may be set to launch a bid for the finals; and with the 2 weeks in a row on the road likely to take their toll in the hot conditions, the Bulldogs will struggle to keep up. Fremantle to win.

Geelong v Brisbane (Skilled Stadium, Sunday 1:10pm)
Geelong’s 6-game winning streak has seen them hit the top of the ladder, but the Cats were made to fight for their result last week against the tenacious Adelaide defence. But a good side will get up in the close games, and the Cats showed strength of character to get through in a game where they didn’t have things going their own way. This week, back at home, they face a Brisbane side where the wheels have fallen off after an encouraging start to the season. Last week they were no match for the Bulldogs, even with the home ground advantage, and travelling to the graveyard at Skilled Stadium is a nightmare next game for the Lions. Geelong are in top form, and although the bubble has to burst eventually, it sure won’t be Brisbane that does it. Cats easily.

Port Adelaide v Essendon (AAMI Stadium, Sunday 4:40pm)
Can Port Adelaide bounce back? The Power were top of the ladder 4 weeks ago, but a 4-game losing streak has seen them crash out of the 8. A few injuries haven’t helped, but the loss of form of key players such as out-of-sorts captain Warren Tredrea is a real concern for Port. This week they return home to take on an Essendon side that has already won once at AAMI this year, and which has shown a remarkable capacity to fight their way back into contests and get up when the games are close. Some say the Bombers have been lucky, and if they are right their luck will continue here. Essendon to continue Port’s misery with another close win.
