Show Us Your Tips - NRL, June 29-July 2

June 28th 2007 01:52
Category: No Category
Only 6 games this weekend, while the remaining 4 teams have a bye in the lead-up to next week's Origin game.

Newcastle v South Sydney
Energy Australia Stadium, Friday 7:30pm
Are the Rabbitohs back? After the season looked to be falling away from them just a few weeks ago, wins at home against Penrith and Cronulla have brought their season back to life. But this will be a tough road trip for them as they travel up the highway to Newcastle. But the Knights have problems of their own - unable to overcome Gold Coast last week, with a rising injury toll and a steady stream of players on their way out. Despite a horrible for & against record the Knights just hang on in the top 8, but on form even that is about to go out the window. Souths to win.

Gold Coast v New Zealand Warriors
Carrara Stadium, Saturday 5:30pm
Gold Coast find themselves in 4th place, a scenario they could barely have believed possible before their debut season started. Everything has gone right for the new franchise, with great crowds through the gate and the new squad gelling together better than anyone could have expected. Tonight they take on the Warriors, who are experiencing a resurgence of their own after good wins over Cronulla and Penrith. Both sides have produced their best football at home this season, and for that reason the Titans should have the edge here in what should be a good contest between two in-form teams.

Penrith v Brisbane
CUA Stadium, Saturday 7:30pm
The Panthers' nightmare season continued last week when they were thrashed by the Warriors; and it seems a long time ago since their early season clash when they beat the Broncos at Suncorp in golden point. The Broncos were struggling at the time, but in the last few weeks have rediscovered their form and are embarking on a campaign to get their season back on track. But at the worst possible time, the Broncos will have their squad decimated by Origin commitments and the stars who got them to such an impressive performance against the Tigers on Monday will not be playing. But the younger brigade should have enough in reserve to get the Broncos over the line here.

Canberra v Wests Tigers
Canberra Stadium, Sunday 2:00pm
The Raiders suffered a shock defeat at home last week when the Cowboys returned to form. But overall their home record has been impressive this season, and will keep their squad intact despite the Origin unavailabilities. This week they take on Wests Tigers, who after an impressive start to the season have fallen away in recent weeks. The Tigers are 6th and the Raiders 13th, but incredibly a 16-point win to the Raiders would be enough for Canberra to pass the Tigers on an incredibly tight ladder. And with the home ground advantage, that's what should happen here.

St George/Illawarra v Manly
Oki Jubilee Oval, Sunday 3:00pm
It's been a disastrous season for the Dragons, who find themselves bottom of the ladder and with confidence at an all-time low. It couldn't be a worse time for them to take on Manly; although the Sea Eagles will have questions of their own to face up to after a loss to the Bulldogs at Brookvale last week. Origin duties have weakened both teams, but shouldn't have anywhere near enough impact to make St George competitive here - Manly easily.

Bulldogs v Sydney Roosters
Telstra Stadium, Monday 7:00pm
It's the first night game between these clubs since the 2004 grand final at the same ground, and much of the attention in this game will be in the crowd interaction - there is a history of crowd trouble when these teams clash and a tight security presence will be expected. On the field, the Roosters' mini-revival came crashing down last week when they were jumped by Parramatta, the Eels taking a 22-0 half-time lead. This week they take on the Bulldogs, who had an impressive return to form against Manly last week, to be only one game out of the top 8 despite a sluggish start to the season. At home, and with superior recent form, the Bulldogs should have the edge here.
