Jelena Jankovic took 3 sets to overcome Lucie Safarova
Into the third round, where the higher seeds meet the lower seeds. Such a clash opened proceedings on court 1, where 3rd seed Jelena Jankovic was drawn to meet 25th seeded Czech Lucie Safarova in what turned out to be an absorbing clash. Jankovic was struggling to find her best form early, and when Safarova managed to get a break she took the first set 7-5.
Into the second set, and neither player was prepared to give anything away. The set went to 4-4 and that's how it stayed for the next 20 minutes. Jankovic threw everything at Safarova's serve and held 5 break points, while Safarova pulled out the stops when she had to. The game went to deuce 11 times before Safarova eventually held and it went to a tie-break. Jankovic took out the tie-break to force a third set, but the Serb needed an injury time-out for treatment from a trainer; and then the rain came. When play restarted, the Czech's resistance faded and Jankovic powered home in the third 6-2 to go through.
In a great day for the Serbs, unseeded Janko Tipsarevic opened proceedings on centre court with a 5-set upset of Fernando Gonzalez, the third set going to 8-6. Joining Gonzalez in the exit lounge were 9th seed James Blake after a 4-set loss to Juan Carlos Ferrero, womens 8th seed Anna Chakvetadze who went down in 3 sets to Michaela Krajicek and former champion Martina Hingis who lost in straight sets to unseeded American Laura Granville. 15th seed Ivan Ljubicic was also a casualty, going down in 4 sets to unseeded Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu and then with Ernest Gulbits suffering defeat in the doubles to Kevin Kim and Australian Robert Smeets.
