Janko Tipsarevic bowed out, defeated by Nikolay Davydenko
On again, off again. Play started and stopped over and over during another rain-frustrated day at Wimbledon; as the tournament fell even further behind schedule. Organisers must surely be regretting the decision not to play during the scheduled rest day on Sunday.
During the play that was possible, there were upsets. Defending champion Amelie Mauresmo's bid for back-to-back Wimbledon crowns is over, after Mauresmo went down in 3 sets to tall teenage Czech Nicole Vaidisova. Also out of the tournament is third seed Jelena Jankovic, who started strongly against Marion Bartoli but was unable to last the distance. No such dramas for Svetlana Kuznetsova or Ana Ivanovic, who comfortably made their way into the quarter-finals.
Lleyton Hewitt completed his third-round clash against Argentinian Guillermo Canas, while Juan Carlos Ferrero ended the run of unseeded Serb Janko Tipsarevic. 6th seed Nikolay Davydenko also recorded a straight-sets win over Gael Monfils. But the frustration for Raphael Nadal continued, with his third-round match against Robin Soderling still not completed; and is locked at 4-4 in the fifth set. Novak Djokovic and Nicolas Kiefer are also still to complete their third-round match; locked at one set all with both sets going off in tie-breaks.
